Waterproofing solutions re-energise npower car park

TREMCO deck waterproofing solutions on a car park serving npower's Swindon office

Following the successful use of TREMCO deck waterproofing solutions on a car park serving npower's Swindon office, the products have again been successfully employed at another npower multi storey car park, this time serving its Solihull office. The car park was constructed in precast precast and in-situ concrete with asphalt waterproofing which was suffering from water ingress resulting in corrosive deposits dropping onto vehicles in the levels below.

Some 3,000m2 of the deck required treatment and,initially,a team from tremco illbruck visited the site to undertake a survey. They then made recommendations for tackling the problems usinga unique combination ofTREMCO products to replace movement joints on the upper decks and to overlay existing sound asphalt. Ladtract, a tremco illbruck partner installer, was appointed to undertake the work by property services company,Cushman and Wakefield,on behalf of npower. 

In total, some 30m of the Migutan FP90/25Ni ss waterproof movement joint system was used along with FP90/25/E4 Ni, a floor-to-wall version of the joint. The FN110/30 surface-mounted movement joint was used on a lower-covered deck where a value engineered movement joint could be used. In addition, a number of areas, particularly at parapet joints and perimeter upstands where water ingress was occurring, were sealed using illbruck SP525 Frame and Façade Sealant & Adhesive; this was interfaced with the detailing of the waterproofing system to absorb horizontal and vertical movement. 

The combined, single system of both protective coatings and complementary movement joints, from one manufacturer, is the key to the success of this project and of many others. Unique in the marketplace, this combined system is proven and eliminates non-compatibility problems further down the line.

The use of these products allowed any defective areas of the asphalt to be broken out and filled and then overcoated with TREMCO's MMA rapid cure flexible system so the asphalt was repaired and waterproofed. This also improved the aesthetic appearance of the car park and allowed the space to perform better because it is well delineated.

tremco illbruck supplied on-going technical support throughout the three month contract. The solution chosen was both economic and time-effective. It saved the need to strip off and replace the asphalt across the whole area and, logistically, it avoided the movement of large quantities of materials through the car park while it was in use.
