FAT RAIL FARE RISES, CAN BE CONTROLLED!

This year there's been a greater than usual increase in fares. Last year's government approved average rise of 1.9% has been allowed to increase to an average of 2.3% when fares operators are permitted to increase are included.

Virgin East Coast has been granted a 5.5% increase for example. This also means on some particular routes the jump can be even higher. The Campaign For Better Transport's Lianna Etkind says, ‘Rail companies relish all the price hike confusion. It is high time they provided fairer, simpler and cheaper fares.'

But there is a way passengers can take action rather than wait for what the Campaign For Better Transport is asking for. Always book ahead even by a day.

Book through an independent online site like Raileasy or Trainsplit as they are finding ‘split ticket' savings on 71% of journeys which provide an average additional savings on 28% or £26 compared to any other train booking site.

It's precisely the anomalies caused by the way price increases are selectively introduced that split ticketing uses to find cheaper prices.

Invest in a railcard to save frequently if you are a senior, student, family etc. Be flexible on time and avoid rush hour peaks.

Taking the strain out of rail fare hikes now needs extra planning before you take the train.
