TREMCO CP930 MMA Waterproof Sealer

TREMCO's Rapid Cure MMA waterproofing membrane has been used by a leading leak and environmental protection specialist to seal bunding around fuel tanks in a remote Scottish location.

Andel specialises in oil leak detection, oil handling and containment services to deliver ‘total environment protection'.

The company was called in by power company, SSE, to refurbish and upgrade a concrete bund containing fuel oil tanks for a power station on the shores of Loch Carnan on the island of South Uist. The surface area to be treated was in the region of 900m2.

The sensitive environmental location is especially vulnerable to pollution and frequent heavy rain was in danger of leaching oil residues through the existing concrete bund and into local watercourses.

Andel used TREMCO CP150 concrete primer, TREMCO CP380 with CP581 Fleece Reinforcement and TREMCO CP930 Rapid Cure MMA the inside of the bund to ensure no contaminants could leak out. Designated walkways were created with an extra coat of Tremco CP930. TREMCO's reinforcing polyester fleece was applied on top of the first coat of CP380 while still wet and the second coat applied over the top.

Andel has used TREMCO membranes on a number of bunding contracts, often in conjunction with Andel's patented Rebund system. This is a modular bunding system comprising components made from recycled plastics. As well as re-using waste plastics to reduce environmental impact, the Rebund system is quick and easy to install.

"We recently provided Andel with a membrane system for a bund at Glasgow Royal Infirmary where the walls were made using the Rebund system," says Mike. "When applying the product to a plastic substrate, we simply abrade the surface to provide a key and then apply the membrane as usual," he says.

At South Uist, the biggest challenge was the unpredictable weather, says Mike. "With most membrane systems, you can only apply one coat a day and you must hope that it doesn't rain before the product has cured. But with our Rapid Cure system, you can complete it in a single day. You just need a few dry hours, rather than a few dry days," he adds.

The MMA (methyl-methacrylate)-based CP380 membrane cures in just 30 minutes, even in low temperatures. The optional sealer top-coat takes only 15 minutes to go off.
