Jerky and Biltong - a healthy, tasty, high protein snack

Why is our jerky and biltong so healthy and tasty? There are no artificial flavourings or colourings used, it is naturally high in protein and is also the perfect convenience snack as there is no need to refrigerate.

The ingredients used to make our jerky are simple store cupboard ingredients such as Kikommon Soy Sauce, Aspalls Cyder Vinegar and Rowes Honey. We also use a variety of herbs like oregano, black pepper, thyme and chilli. Our jerky and biltong is gluten free and with no added MSG, plus using premium cuts of silverside beef allows us to maintain high natural levels of protein.

For our biltong we use a blend of spices from a traditional South African recipe.

Therefore, when compared to other popular snacks such as crisps and popcorn, jerky and biltong are lower in fat and high in protein, but that does not mean they can't taste great too!

What do we make our jerky and biltong from?

Our main jerky and biltong brands, Wild West and Cruga, are made from silverside of beef which is predominantly sourced from the UK and Ireland with a small amount from the EU. 

For our jerky we use the silverside cut from the hind quarter, which is a premium cut and has a consistent quality across all herds. The nature of the muscle fibres also makes it ideal for absorbing our jerky marinade. In addition, silverside is a relatively solid muscle which lends itself perfectly for being cut into strips for hanging when we produce biltong. It's also relatively free from gristle, so means that it is handled less in production - all we have to then do is marinate the silverside in our fine blend of spices and leave it to hang and turn into biltong.

Our new range, Wild West Deli, is made using beef brisket and this has allowed us to create a softer jerky. The brisket is tenderised through slowly cooking and smoking in our jerky ovens.

Jerky and biltong is therefore a great tasting, low fat, high protein snack and is perfect for all occasions as part of a balanced diet: a snack between meals, post gym, in the great outdoors or watching TV.
