Portable on-demand hospital disinfection system launched

PRESS RELEASE: 17 June 2016

APC Contech to supply UK hospitals with on-demand disinfection

APC Contech has signed a new distribution agreement with Codonics, the leading USA-based innovator in medication safety systems and infection control.

In an addition to its sole UK supplier agreement for Codonics' D-6000 mobile device disinfection range, APC Contech will supply the new on-demand Radius3 Disinfection Technology system to UK hospitals and associated healthcare markets.

Radius3 provides hospitals and care environments with a practical innovation for targeted disinfection. The system is compact, powerful and portable. It reduces disinfection times and can easily be carried for use where required, overcoming one of the primary problems associated with static systems.

Radius3 is designed for fast, on-demand disinfection of high-touch surfaces such as the entire patient bed area, bathrooms and fixtures, keyboards, monitors, and work stations on wheels.

The system incorporates three individually adjustable heads which can be positioned vertically and horizontally to direct intense, 254 nanometer wavelength UVC light to a broad surface area for disinfection. The heads can be positioned from six inches to more than seven feet from the ground and four feet outward. This versatility allows users to position the heads in close proximity to multiple targeted surfaces, allowing a maximum UVC dose to be applied.

The system's UVC technology is proven to reduce harmful hospital-acquired infections on hard to disinfect radiology imaging surfaces such as CT scanners, ultrasound machine keyboards and X-ray machines where dangerous pathogens can reside on all surfaces.

In a 180-second cycle, Radius3 achieves a 3-5 log* reduction (99.9 to 99.999%) in pathogens such as MRSA, VRE, MDR-gram negative, Norovirus and C.diff spores.

Commenting on the new agreement, Phil Lancaster, Managing Director of Advanced Power Components, said:

"The transmission of Hospital Acquired Infections is a serious problem.

"The European Centre for Disease Control reports that approximately 4,100,000 patients are estimated to acquire a healthcare-associated infection in the EU each year. Some 20-30% of these are considered to be preventable by intensive hygiene and control programmes.

"The UVC light technology used in these Codonics solutions will be an important part of this prevention programme."

APC Contech provides technical design-in support on a wide range of High Technology Data Input Products. Part of APC Technology Group plc, it specialises in the supply of medical technology including specialist keyboards, PCs, touch monitors and infection control devices.

* All results based on independent testing. C. difficile was tested directly and, for safety and equivalence, challenge organisms of greater irradiation resistance replaced other pathogens noted. Tests conducted with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus atrophaeus.
