Author Interview & Review Opp: Political family fiction - The First Wife's Tale

NEW RELEASE INFORMATION SHEET

The First Wife's Taleby Jane Biran

The First Wife's Tale is an intriguing family fiction novel that chronicles the home and work life, secrets and drama of northern Labour politician Robert Bennett providing insight into life as a politician's wife.

Jane Biran's latest novel trails Robert's wife Isabel as she realises her husband's London life might not be as quiet and uncomplicated as she had first assumed. Robert has two secrets, only one of which he has shared with his wife. He confided in his wife that he suffers from OCD but fails to share with his beloved Isabel that he is hiding a mistress down in London. The possibly fatal illness of the Opposition Leader presents Robert with the chance to fulfil his life-long career dream, but to do so he realises he may have to call time on his extramarital activity. Isabel's life is far from simple, even without the added complications caused by her other half. She is a marriage guidance counsellor and a social activist, as well as a homemaker and main support for their two children: a teenage daughter and a younger son who has Down's Syndrome. The First Wife's Tale is complex, engrossing and far-reaching in its universal themes: from politics to marriage, careers to children, balancing work and life, and caring for a child with disabilities. This contemporary fiction novel describes the up, downs and complexities of a family that is stretched to breaking point. Food, cooking, eating and family meal times are intrinsic to the story; visualising and realising them was incredibly important to Jane, so she created a selection of the recipes featured in the book and has added them to the book's appendix.

Quote

"The First Wife's Tale is a compelling read. I read it in one weekend, finding it hard to put down! The political theme feels very current after the recent election in the UK, but its exploration of love and infidelity is timeless."-- Amazon Review.
