Cardiff’s needs a ‘green energy revolution’ to reach net-zero

Cardiff’s energy system will require significant changes, including the development of new solar farms, roof-mounted solar panels on thousands of domestic properties, multiple wind turbines the widespread adoption of heat-pumps and upgrades to the national grid, to achieve net-zero, according to a new Local Area Energy Plan (LAEP) for the city.

Local Area Energy Plans are being developed for each of the local authority areas in Wales and have been funded by Welsh Government, who will be using the findings to inform and develop their national energy plans and policies.

National Grid Electricity Distribution (formerly Western Power) and Wales & West Utilities have also committed to using Cardiff’s Local Area Energy Plan to inform their decarbonisation strategies.

Consultation launched on plans to protect 11 parks in Cardiff

An eight-week public consultation on plans to protect 11 parks in Cardiff and ensure they remain publicly accessible green spaces, has been launched.

Subject to the results of the consultation, Cardiff Council is proposing to enter into a legal agreement known as ‘deed of dedication’ with Fields In Trust - an independent UK-wide charity dedicated to the protection of parks and green spaces.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Council would have to maintain the land for the purposes of outdoor leisure and recreation only – meaning it could not be sold for development or developed by the Council.

Guide to help reduce the risk of dementia now online

A new resource to help residents to understand how to reduce their likelihood of developing dementia is now available online.

The guide - ‘Reducing your risk of developing dementia', provides information about some of the risk factors associated with developing dementia and how making changes now can help keep your body healthy and prevent damage to your brain.

The guide has been produced in partnership by Dementia Friendly Cardiff, Dementia Friendly Vale and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

Council team helps transform Principality stadium for Monster Jam fun

A massive 4,000 tons of soil from Cardiff Motocross created the epic track for Monster Jam at Principality Stadium last weekend! Huge thanks to Mark Thomas, our Vocational Education Programme lead and his team, for coordinating the delivery of 222 lorry loads of soil over two days.

‘No mow’ verge home to 39 different plant species

A Cyncoed verge, 1 of 33 new sites introduced this year where grass is not cut until September to support nature, is already home to 39 different plant species!

There are now 144 sites like this in Cardiff - an area the size of 272 football pitches.
