More new homes ready to help tackle homelessness pressures
The first new modular homes on an innovative development to help tackle the immediate shortage of affordable housing in Cardiff are ready to welcome their new residents.
Development partner Wates Group has handed over four new apartments on the former Gasworks site at Ferry Road to the Council, as well as a new community building and on-site office.
The pre-manufactured homes are part of a scheme that will ultimately deliver 155 highly energy-efficient properties in phases at Ffordd Y Rhaffau, Grangetown. The new modular homes, will help to alleviate pressures on local homelessness services and increase the availability of temporary accommodation offering a mix of one to four bedroom properties.
The Council received funding from Welsh Government's Transitional Accommodation Capital Programme for the modular homes, which are built offsite using modern methods of construction (MMC) and lowered onto their final position on-site with all the groundworks completed. The units are being supplied by Daiwa House Modular, @Home and Beattie Passive.
Annual monitoring report for the Local Development Plan shows good progress is being made
Cardiff saw more than 1,000 new jobs created and 1,681 new homes built between April 2022 and March 2023 according to a new report which evaluates the progress of the city's Local Development Plan.
The housing figure is the biggest single-year growth seen since 2007-2008.
The data is part of the seventh annual report on the current adopted Local Development Plan (LDP) which will be discussed by Cardiff Council's Cabinet at its next meeting on Thursday, October 19.
An LDP is a blueprint for the future development of the city and allows the council to have more control over different types of development, helping to shape a cleaner, greener, stronger and fairer Cardiff.
The report analyses more than 130 indicators and shows that good progress has been made across a range of them, including: jobs, new homes, affordable homes, and the transition towards sustainable forms of transport.
If Cardiff Council's Cabinet endorses the report, it will be submitted to Welsh Government by October 31st, in line with legislative requirements.

University students set Carbon Neutral Cardiff Challenge
Some of the brightest young minds in Cardiff have set to work developing solutions to the challenge of creating a carbon neutral Council.
The latest figures, for 2020/21 showed a 13% reduction in Cardiff Council's carbon emissions compared to the previous year as work progressed on the local authority's One Planet Cardiff strategy in response to the climate emergency.
This term Cardiff Metropolitan University students taking a Business Solutions and Transformation module will be looking at opportunities to further accelerate this reduction.
