A Dementia Friendly Cardiff Festival will be held at Llanover Hall next week, part of the city's Dementia Action Week activities.
The event on Thursday, May 18, 11am - 3pm will be an opportunity for people with dementia and their carers to find out more about services available to them, as well as a chance to take part in some fun activities.
Dementia Action Week (May 15 - 21) is Alzheimer's Society's biggest and longest running awareness campaign. Each year, individuals and organisations across the UK are encouraged to ‘act on dementia'.
Dementia Friendly Cardiff is a partnership between Cardiff Council, Alzheimer's Society Cymru and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, working to make Cardiff a Dementia Friendly city. The movement encourages and supports organisations, local businesses and community groups in the city to become more dementia friendly and provide better support for people living with dementia and their families.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Huw Thomas, and Cabinet member for Social Services (Adults), Cllr Norma Mackie will attend the event next Thursday.
Cllr Mackie said: "It's important that we mark Dementia Action Week every year and I'm really pleased we're doing it in such style this year with a Dementia Friendly Cardiff festival at Llanover Hall.
"The proportion of our city's population living with dementia is projected to increase over the coming years so it's essential that we have services and provision that meets their needs. Next week's festival is an opportunity to showcase some of those services that can make all the difference in ensuring people living with dementia, and their families, live well.
"It will also be the chance to have fun, meet new people and have a go at some of the activities offered at Llanover Hall so I'm really looking forward to the event."
Cardiff Hubs and Libraries will be offering a range of dementia-friendly events and activities throughout Dementia Action Week, as they do throughout the year. Details of dementia cafes, health and wellbeing activities, sing-alongs and more can be found by visiting https://cardiffhubs.co.uk/
The Dementia Friendly Cardiff website www.dementiafriendlycardiff.co.uk also provides details of events in the local community, as well as a wealth of advice and resources to assist people living with dementia and their carers to access the support they need.
