Museum of Cardiff has received a Visit Wales Gold Award for delivering a memorable visitor experience.

The museum, housed in the former Old Library building on the Hayes in Cardiff city centre, aims to tell the history of Cardiff through the stories of the people who have lived and worked in the city over the centuries.

Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Parks, Cllr Jennifer Burke-Davies, said: "The Museum of Cardiff does a fantastic job of bringing Cardiff's history to life for visitors, it really is a must-visit attraction for anybody with an interest in our city's fascinating past and this is a richly deserved accolade."

The Visit Wales Visitor Attraction Quality Scheme is a quality-based assessment which reflects the visitor experience and the quality of the product and services offered by the attraction and its staff.

Alongside the permanent collections, current exhibitions at the museum include a photography exhibition from the Sight Life photography group, and online exhibitions looking at Cardiff's Victory in Europe Day celebrations, exploring how life in the city changed during lockdown, and celebrating the city's communities through sound.

Over the summer holidays more than 200 children and their families took part in drop-in craft activities. As part of summer ‘Food and Fun' activities, five schools took part in ‘hands on history' object handling sessions, as well as museum gallery trails and ‘My Museum' activities. Face-to-face reminiscence sessions in partnership with the council's Independent Living Service, offering a place for a friendly chat and a chance to share memories of Cardiff also began.
