PROPOSALS TO INCREASE PRIMARY SCHOOL PLACES FOR NORTH WEST CARDIFF

9/7/2021

An investment and redevelopment opportunity for Pentyrch Primary School could be developed as part of proposals to increase primary school provision in the North West of the city.

A report to Cardiff Council's Cabinet makes recommendations that a public consultation is held on proposals to expand the school from140 to 210 places, and to establish nursery provision of 48 part-time places at the school.

If progressed, the proposals would mean the school could benefit from enhanced school buildings, improved learning environments andsupport the school to maintain and continue to build on its recent progress.

Theestablishment of nursery provision at the school would also promote continuity and progression in children's learning from the age of three and that thosefamilies seeking nursery places would no longer need totake up places in a private nursery settings or travel out of the Pentyrch area.

Subject to consultation, expanding the school would also play a part inmeeting the projected demand for school placesto serveparts ofCreigiau & St Fagans, Pentyrch and Radyr & Morganstown. It would providesufficient places for children resident in the existing school catchment area as well as providing places for children resident in the new housingdevelopment at Goitre Fach Farm, near Llantrisant Road.

Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry said: "If a public consultation is agreed and plans progress, expanding Pentyrch Primary School would provide a range of benefits and exciting opportunities for both the school and its community.

"Continuous improvements and the successful collaboration with Llanishen Fach Primary School, has paved a strong pathway for the future of the school. Thisstrategic expansion would allow greater opportunities for staff and pupils, whilst giving more children the chance to benefit from the education onoffer at the site."

Cllr Merry added:"The new housing developments in North West Cardiff will generate significant increase in the demand for school places in the area. By expanding Pentyrch Primary School, we could ensure we meet that demand as well as providing pupils and staff with access to an excellent, modern learning environment."

Proposals for a number of new housing developments in North West Cardiff are underway and will be delivered as part of Cardiff's Local Development plan (LDP) which sets out the infrastructure required to facilitate and sustain the city's growth up to 2026.

As part of the planning agreement between housing developers and the Council, Section 106 contributions have been agreed to provide investment in infrastructure for local areas.

The report will go to Cardiff Council's Cabinet when it meets on Thursday July 15.
