Thornhill named ‘Cemetery of the Year’ for second year running

Thornhill Cemetery has been named ‘Cemetery of the Year’ for the second year in a row, beating two other finalists to the gold award in the large burial ground category.

The UK-wide awards, which are organised and promoted by the Memorial Awareness Board, focus on industry standards, environmental issues and good practice.

Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Michael Michael, said: “To win this award in two successive years, and particularly in a year when Bereavement Services have had to respond to the challenges of Covid-19, is fantastic recognition for the team. I know how much they care about the work they do for the people of Cardiff and this really is well deserved.”

Philip Potts, of the Memorial Awareness Board, said: “The awards are an excellent opportunity to reward hard-working staff and demonstrate the central role Cemeteries can play in the community. They provide places of peaceful contemplation and beauty, as well as their ecological importance.

“The team at Thornhill Cemetery performed exceptionally throughout the extensive judging period.”
