How to make Pancake Day food waste friendly

24.02.2020

How do you eat yours? With lemon and sugar? Banana and chocolate spread? Maybe you opt for savoury over sweet? However you eat yours, it's important to remember that Pancake Day is based around food waste prevention, so here's how you can make sure your day is food waste friendly.

  • Pop your egg shells, squeezed lemons and food leftovers into your food caddy and bags for recycling.

  • Use leftovers from dinner to create a savoury option for your Pancake Day meal. Try leftover bolognaise or pesto, ham and leftover vegetables or leftover mashed potatoes. There are currently 48 savoury pancake recipes on the  BBC Good Food  website.

  • If you need to buy your basic ingredients - butter, milk and eggs - try to get them from a zero-waste shop in order to cut down on packaging. A search on  Zero Waste Near Me  will come up with some suggestions.

  • Check our  Recycling A-Z if you're unsure if we can recycle an item.

Residents will be given extra help to recycle properly under a new scheme, launching onMonday 2ndMarch, which will let you know when you put out the wrong items unsuitable for recycling.

It's hoped the new scheme will make a huge difference in the quality of recycling and composting collected from the kerbside - helping the city become one of the best recycling cities in the world.

The new campaign will see bright pink stickers placed on recycling and garden waste bags or bins alerting residents that they contain incorrect items. If a pink sticker is put onto a container, residents will have to take their waste back into their property to remove the incorrect items before they put their recycling out again on the next collection date.
