A series of events will take place across the Welsh Capital in support of White Ribbon Day which takes place on November 25^th, markingthe United Nations International Day for the elimination of violence against women and girls.

Candlelit vigils, marches, information stands, a fashion show and special all-faith services are among the events which take place from November through to December 10th, which marks United Nations Human Rights Day. Other activity includes the flowerbed outside Cardiff Castle being planted with white blooms to depict the White Ribbon and workshops being carried out with a number of Cardiff and Vale Scout groups.

Cabinet Member for Social Care, Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Susan Elsmore said: "Cardiff aims to raise awareness of violence against women but also importantly challenge attitudes and engage men in discussing these issues.

"The city has a longstanding successful track record in responding to domestic abuse and in our fifth year of supporting White Ribbon we continue to promote this campaign, encouraging people to wear a white ribbon and make a pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women in any form."

"Men and boys play an instrumental role in challenging the attitudes and stereotypes that enable violence against women and girls, and violence generally, to flourish. We have an ambitious White Ribbon Plan and we are committed to achieving the actions within it. Together, we have real opportunity to make Cardiff a safe place for everyone."

Earlier this year Cardiff Council in partnership with the Vale of Glamorgan, received the Regional White Ribbon Award for its commitment to end violence against women.

The award was presented by Chris Green OBE, founder of White Ribbon UK and demonstrated the significant work undertaken by staff and partner agencies to eradicate Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence across the region.

Last month the city hosted the fifth‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes'event which saw over 100 men walk a mile in women's shoes to show their support for the White Ribbon Campaign. A  well attended White Ribbon  Ambassador event that focused developing the music and sports elements of the White Ribbon Action Plan followed on from the event

Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transport and Cardiff Council's White Ribbon Ambassador, Cllr Caro Wild said: "The White Ribbon campaign is the world's largest male led movement to end men's violence against women which sees supporters wearing white ribbons.

"My role as a White Ribbon ambassador, is to encourage men to discuss and challenge the culture that allows such high incidents of violence, domestic abuse and sexual violence against women. Last month I was joined by over 100 men to ‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes'demonstrating their support. We want more men to pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. Please join us in celebrating White Ribbon day and the 12 days of action that follow."

Every year in the UK more than one million women suffer domestic abuse and more than 360,000 are sexually assaulted. Although abuse against women is disproportionately higher, anyone can be affected by violence and abuse.

Domestic violence statistics show that 70% of incidents result in injury and that on average, two women in England and Wales are killed by a partner every week.
