Essential work has been carried out to restore and refurbish Rumney War Memorial, bringing the monument back to its former condition.
Cardiff Council's Bereavement Services were responsible for the project which has been funded by Cadw, the War Memorial Trust and Cardiff Council. The work was carried out by Mossfords Ltd and includes re-gilding of the inscriptions, professional cleaning and repointing, replacement paving, renovated railings and a new gate.
Originally unveiled in 1924 as the Cenotaph by the Marchioness of Bute, Lord Tredegar at the newly built memorial hall, the opening attracted two thousand people, all present to honour Rumney's heroic dead.
The Venerable the Archdeacon of Monmouth was also present at the event which highlighted that 290 Rumney men served their country during the war and regretfully 35 never came back. Fourteen wreaths were placed on the cenotaph by relatives.
Cabinet Member for Clean Streets, Recycling and Environment, Cllr Michael Michael said: "The Rumney War Memorial is poignant monument and one that the community of the then ‘village' of Rumney invested both time, hard work and resource to erect.
"It is one of many memorials and cenotaphs in our city which provides a connection with the past and a place to reflect. They allow people of all ages to learn and remember those who gave their lives for us in war and it is vital that we ensure they are in the best possible condition.
"I am delighted with the work carried out and extend my appreciation to those organisations who helped fund this project."
Frances Moreton, Director, War Memorials Trust said, "War memorials are a tangible connection to our shared past creating a link between the fallen and today. It is vital we ensure all our war memorials are in the best possible condition for their age and the charity is delighted to support this project. The centenary of World War I is a wonderful opportunity forlocal communities across the country to protect and conserve their war memorials. If anyone knows of any other war memorials in need of help please contact us."
