Dementia and song: Screening of 'Before I Leave' documentary

Cardiff Libraries have teamed up with National Theatre Wales and Patrick Jones to screen the documentary about the making of the hugely successful production, 'Before I Leave'. Before I Leave is a funny, moving and ultimately uplifting production inspired by community choirs made up of people with dementia.

Poetry Reading

Patrick Jones will be reading from a work in progress collection of poems inspired by his experiences of working with those affected by dementia, sharing the journey he took when writing Before I Leave and also offering a few short writing triggers to get everyone sharing their stories.

Dementia Friendly Movie Screenings

Chapter's Demetria Friendly screenings are a great opportunity
for people living with dementia to enjoy a film in a relaxed
friendly environment. The screening are shown without
adverts and have slightly brighter lighting throughout the
auditorium. The screenings are open to everyone.

Ticket price: £4.50 including a cup of tea or coffee. Tickets for
carers are free. To book a ticket please call our box office

A Walk Through Dementia, Virtual Reality Experience Drop-In
Researchers from Cardiff University use a unique app developed by Alzheimer's Research UK, designed to put you in the shoes of someone living with dementia. Presented in virtual reality, you will look at everyday life through a new lens. Presented with Cardiff University.

Academic Talks
Academics from across the disciplines of neuroscience, social science, biomedicine, humanities and philosophy share their research on understanding dementia and the mind. Presented with Cardiff University. Open to all, free.

Do Not Go Gentle - Performance & Workshop
Everyman Theatre Company will perform script-in-hand excerpts from their play, which takes an unusual
look at older people dealing with life's challenges. This will be followed by a discussion an workshop.

Art Workshops, The Pottery
Work with artist and academic Dr Catherine Lamont-Robinson to discover how engagement with materials can make a positive impact on people with dementia. Presented with Cardiff University. Open to all, free.

Hand I Pocket Funshop
Drop-in Workshop, Dutch Table

Hand I Pockets are playful sensory textile pockets, created to amuse, comfort and engage people with advanced dementia. Come and create your own, either for a specific friend or family member or to be donated to somebody with dementia. This project is run by the CARIAD Research Centre and is a collaboration between Prof. Cathy Treadaway at Cardiff Metropolitan University and Dr Gail Kenning at University of Technology, Sydney. Open to all, free.

Heritage Shop RemPod

Cardiff Libraries are taking the service to the shops! We will be in St David's 2 shopping centre with a Heritage Shop RemPod and letting the public know about the dementia friendly service we offer. From reminiscence sessions in care homes and day centres, to working towards a 100% dementia friendly workforce, from our e-books/audio books and large print materials to the launch of the Dementia Cafe. Adult services will also be in the building offering advice and information.

It is intended for the café to be held every fortnight at the same time following the launch.

 

‘Fforget me not' cupcakes.

Users are encouraged to bring in their e-book and audio book devices if they have them.

 

Digital staff will be on hand to help upload audio and e-books as well as amend setting such as fonts.

A selection of large print, short story, audio books etc will be on offer.

Relaunch of Meals on Wheels

The Meals on Wheels service will be launching its revised brand which includes changes to the criteria which now allows people to self-refer.

 

A taster session will take place in the Dementia Café, staff also be on the ground floor to greet customers with treats from the service.

 

There will also be an information stall which will be located in the Dementia Café and on the first floor.
