Cardiff Council Update: 12 November

Here is the latest update from Cardiff Council, covering: the National Service of Remembrance for Wales; new plans revealed to secure the future of the Old Library; Cardiff's COVID-19 case and test numbers; cases reported in Cardiff's schools in the last seven days; vaccination totals for Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan; and Norwegian Church, update on saving Cardiff's heritage building for future generations.

 

The National Service of Remembrance for Wales

Wales' national observance of Remembrance Sunday, which is jointly hosted by Cardiff Council, the Welsh Government and in partnership with The Royal British Legion, will take place in Cardiff on Sunday, 14thNovember 2021.

Detachments from the Royal Navy, the Army, the Royal Air Force, Merchant Navy, Fishing Fleets and Cadet Forces will march past City Hall and along King Edward VII Avenue to the Welsh National War Memorial in Alexandra Gardens, Cathays Park, Cardiff where they will arrive by 10:40am and form up around the memorial.

Those detachments will be joined by columns of ex-Servicemen and women, organised by the Royal British Legion and columns of civilians representing organisations connected with current and past conflicts.

A selection of music will be played by the Canton Salvation Army Band from 10:30am until shortly before 11am, when the service will begin with bidding and words of scripture given by Cardiff Council Honorary Chaplain, Reverend Canon Stewart Lisk. The Cardiff Military Wives Choir and the Barry Male Voice Choir will lead the hymn singing during the service.

At 10:59am a bugler from The Royal Welsh Regimental Band and Corps of Drums of The Royal Welsh will sound the ‘Last Post' followed at 11am by a gun of the104 Regiment Royal Artillery,Newport who will be firing to mark the start of the two minutes' silence which will be observed. Its conclusion will again be marked by the firing of the gun and the playing of ‘Reveille' by the Bugler.

New plans revealed to secure the future of the Old Library

An update on Cardiff Council's progress in securing the future of the Old Library has been revealed.

A report, which will be presented to the local authority's Cabinet on Thursday 18 November, seeks authority to transfer use of the building via long lease - that will also cover the full running and maintenance costs - to the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

Cabinet is asked to consider the College's plans which include introducing a series of music and performance spaces in the existing rooms and further developing existing work at the Old Library in respect of the Welsh language, to promote and protect the language.

The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama full plans include:

 

  • sustain and deepen existing aims in the Old Library to promote and protect the Welsh language.
  • return the Old Library to its original educational function for the College's students and participants.
  • restore the listed building to showcase its original features, retaining the original building layout.
  • introduce a series of performance, exhibition and rehearsal spaces into the existing rooms.
  • provide public access to a "city living room" on the ground floor, with café/creative workspace.
     

Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said:"These are really exciting new plans for the future of the Old Library, whilst still remaining sympathetic to the history and tradition of the building."

Norwegian Church: Update on saving Cardiff's heritage building for future generations

An update on Cardiff Council's progress in securing the future of the Norwegian Church has been revealed.

A report, which will be presented to the local authority's Cabinet on Thursday 18 November, will update on proposals to transfer the Norwegian Church, including the current lease, to a new charitable body led by the Welsh Norwegian Society.

The proposed approach will see the new charitable body invest in the building and take control of the day-to-day running of the Church.

Cabinet Member for Investment and Development, Cllr Russell Goodway, said: "The Norwegian Church is one of the most iconic buildings on Cardiff Bay's waterfront and we have to find new ways of protecting it for future generations.
