Triumphant Sutton gymnasts return from world championships

Sutton Village Gymnastic Club’s talented team of young gymnasts have now returned from their trip of a lifetime to the IAIGC World Championships in Florida – clutching a dazzling array of medals.

With a helping hand from local law firm James Legal, 10 East Yorkshire athletes aged between nine and 14 competed with more than 1,000 gymnasts from across the globe in the prestigious event at the end of June.

Coaches, parents and gymnasts at the family-run Sutton Village Gymnastics Club, based in Potterill Lane, Sutton, have devoted months of graft in both rigorous training regimes and fundraising efforts to ensure the team could participate in the prestigious annual competition.

The hard work has paid off, with the majority of the team taking top-10 places in their categories, and two girls stunning the judges with spectacular performances that earned them gold and bronze medals.

Thirteen-year-old Katie Russell somersaulted her way to gold in floor, and bronze on the vault and beam, while Millie Tennison, 11, took gold in the vault for her age group, granting both girls ‘world champion’ status.

Katie’s mum Samantha said: “The girls all performed amazingly, especially considering there was such a big audience. The coaches and parents are all ecstatic! The girls are taking it all in their stride but we are so very proud of them.

“The atmosphere at the event was brilliant, people were so friendly and supportive. There was a huge sense of occasion and the team really enjoyed themselves, it was a fantastic experience for them all.”

Now the intensive training period is over, the team can look forward to having a bit of time out to just enjoy their gymnastics.

James Legal Managing Director Nick Miller said: “We were delighted to be able to sponsor the gymnasts and are absolutely over the moon about their success in America. It’s inspiring to see what young people can achieve with a combination of hard work, dedication and talent.”

Thanks to James Legal’s sponsorship the team were kitted out with sparkling competition leotards as well as a set of bright red jackets emblazoned with their sponsors’ logos.

The club’s head coach Danielle Wright said: “The support from our sponsors has been absolutely phenomenal. I’d like to say a huge thank you to our main sponsor James Legal as well as our other sponsors. We wouldn’t have made it to America without their help.

“Going to the world championships is expensive. There’s the entry fees, the cost of the flights, accommodation and food, and also the gym kit that the team wear. We rely on help from our community and local businesses to be able to get there onto that world stage and show what young people from a village near Hull are capable of.”

Succeeding in this sport requires an impressive amount of commitment. The gymnasts usually squeeze in up to 11 hours of training a week around their school work, and coach Danielle, who’s a fashion designer by day, is at the gym almost every evening and weekend.

“Everyone, the gymnasts, their parents, the coaches, work so hard,” said Danielle. “The girls have really pulled it out of the bag this year and I couldn’t be prouder of them. It’s wonderful to know we have so much local support, too.”
