Metals recycler turns to Lanes for national drainage service

A global leader in metals trading, processing, and recycling has selected Lanes Group plc to provide drainage maintenance services across its six UK operating sites.

ELG Group, part of the German Haniel Group, specialises in trading and recycling materials for the stainless steel industry, as well as high-performance materials, such as superalloys, titanium, and carbon fibres.

Lanes, the UK's largest independent drainage specialist, is putting together a maintenance programme for ELG Haniel Metals Ltd which includes CCTV drainage surveying, drain jetting, interceptor emptying and cleaning, and pipe rehabilitation.

David Stokes, Purchasing and Facilities Manager at ELG Haniel Metals Ltd, said: "Drainage maintenance is a vital element of our environmental protection strategy, which we take very seriously.

"We wanted to work with a specialist service provider with national reach, so we have a joined-up approach to site drainage maintenance, with consistently high standards.

"We are confident Lanes can deliver this for us. They have depots close to all our operational sites, and a comprehensive range of planned and reactive services that we know we can draw on at any time."

ELG Haniel Metals Ltd has its UK headquarters in Sheffield, with further sites in Scotland, the North West, the Midlands, the South West, and the South East.

The group also has operations across North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.

Terry Jefferies, National Business Development Manager for Lanes, said metals recycling sites have specific conditions that make planned and preventative maintenance (PPM) of drainage systems essential.

He added: "By products can include wastewater contaminated with oils and grease, while heavy machinery can cause damage to underground pipes, which makes monitoring their condition all the more important.

"ELG already has drainage interceptors in place to manage these pollution risks. Our job will be to monitor and maintain these assets to ensure they are working effectively and providing the protection ELG needs."

A coordinated programme of full site CCTV drainage surveys has been implemented across ELG's UK sites to ensure maps of drainage systems are up to date and accurate.

Lanes will then put together a PPM programme appropriate for each site, based on its size, the age and condition of its drainage assets, and the nature and intensity of the operational activity on each site.
