Lights, camera, action – let’s dance!

A new short film, Boombox Caerdydd, featuring the people of Cardiff dancing in their favourite green space in the city, has its premiere in the capital this month.

The film is the result of a collaboration between Migrations, the teambehind art installation TAPE and virtual reality experience In the Eyes of the Animal, and American artist Ely Kim, in partnership with RSPB Cymru and Cardiff Council.

The first showing of the film will take place on Thursday July 19 at 7pm in the vibrant pop-up events venue, Depot, on Dumballs Road, Cardiff.

The 12 minute film has been created over the past year and features 100 people who live, work or play in Cardiff dancing to their favorite music in their favorite green spot in the city. With a diverse range of locations from Flat Holm to the River Taff and Bute Park, an eclectic range of musical tastes and some fantastic moves, the film is a celebration of Cardiff's natural environment and its communities.

Joining the film's 100 stars, members of the public are now invited to the premiere at Depot to be among the first to view the unique production. A sister film, featuring interviews with the film's participants will also be aired at the event, providing further details on their choice of music, location and why they love Cardiff's green spaces.

Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said: "We are extremely fortunate in Cardiff to boast a wealth of green spaces in the city with our wonderful parks and open spaces and Boombox Caerdydd is an innovative and inclusive way to showcase these places.

"It doesn't matter where people chose to dance - I know that some back gardens and allotments feature in the film - it's all about celebrating places that have a special meaning to that individual.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing the film. I've heard that a few Cardiff characters pop up in the footage and we are encouraging anyone who wants to come along to the premiere to join us at Depot. I'm particularly eager to see our former Lord Mayor, Cllr Bob Derbyshire, showcasing his dancing skills in the film.

"This has been another fantastic project where we have worked with RSPB Cymru and Migrations to promote, celebrate and encourage people to explore the great outdoors and wildlife in the city."

Project Manager for RSPB Cymru's Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff project, Carolyn Robertson said: "To date over 80,000 people have enjoyed wild time with nature and art through our collaborations with Migrations in Bute Park. Our mission is to engage even more whilst our research has found that only one child in every eight in Wales is even reasonably connected with nature."

"Boombox Caerdydd has inspired people of all ages to explore and express through dance their connection to nature in the places they feel it most. From parks to allotments, formal gardens to nature reserves, the film is a true celebration of Cardiff's greenspaces and how important those spaces are for people as much as wildlife."

Karine Décorne, Artistic Director of Migrations, said: "We are delighted of this new collaboration with RSPB Cymru. Through dance and film the people of Cardiff have come together to become co-creators of this new short film, celebrating the uniqueness of Cardiff green spaces. Migrations aims to engage audiences in international contemporary arts, creating unique experiences deeply rooted in Wales. Working with RSPB Cymru in such a meaningful partnership supports our aims to continue reaching new audiences while using the power of the arts to raise awareness about the importance to protect green spaces and wildlife."
