Making Mischief at Cardiff libraries this summer

The Summer Reading Challenge is back in Cardiff libraries and hubs and young readers across the city are encouraged to make mischief as part of this year's challenge.

The theme of this year's challenge, organised by The Reading Agency and delivered in libraries across the country, is Mischief Makers, inspired by the much-loved children's title Beano, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary.

To take part in Mischief Makers, all children aged four to 11-years-old need to do is sign up at their nearest library and read any six books over the summer. They'll also be given a colourful collector's map of Beanotown to keep a record of their Summer Reading Challenge journey.

The Challenge will be officially launched in Cardiff with afun-packed party at Central Library Hub on Saturday, July 14, 2.30pm. The party will include lots of fun activities including arts and crafts, storytime, a treasure hunt and much more.

Young visitors can to sign up for the challenge at the party or any other branch library or Hub in the city.

Last year, over 8,300 children in Cardiff signed up for the main challenge and the early years challenge for under-4s andthis year it is hoped even more will get involved.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: "We're delighted to be involved in the Summer Reading Challenge again this year. Every year, more and more children in Cardiff sign up to read six books during the school holidays, when literacy levels can dip.

"The Summer Reading Challenge helps keep children engaged with learning in a way they really enjoy. We want more children signing up again this year when there will be a host of fun activities in our libraries and hubs."

As children work their way through their six books, they will gain reward stickers  to add to their Beanotown maps. Everyone who completes the challenge will also receive a certificate and medal.
