New GCSE exam arrangements provide benchmark for Cardiff performance

Over 3,000 young people across Cardiff received their GCSE results today. 

This year has seen the introduction of a new set of GCSE qualifications in Wales for mathematics, numeracy, English language, Welsh language, English literature and Welsh literature. 

New rules for reporting school performance measures have also been introduced. 

These changes have made a significant difference to the results, which means that 2017 performance cannot be compared with previous years. 

The provisional results for 2017 show that 58% of pupils in Cardiff secondary schools achieved at least five A* to C grades, including mathematics and English or Welsh - known as the Level 2+ indicator. 

This year, 94% of pupils achieved 5 or more GCSEs at A* to G (the Level 1 measure), while for those achieving 5 or more GCSEs at A* to C (or Level 2) the figure for Cardiff is 70%. 

Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry said: "I have enjoyed visiting secondary schools across Cardiff today, meeting the students receiving their GCSE results and talking to staff. 

"Today is the culmination of many years of hard work, and I want to congratulate everyone who collected their results this morning. 

"Although this is the first year that we have seen the new exam arrangements for Wales, and we are effectively at year zero, the picture in Cardiff is promising and the 2017 results will provide a useful comparison in future years. 

"Cardiff is one of the fastest growing cities in the UK, with a vibrant economy providing fantastic career opportunities for our young people. 

"By succeeding in education, the city's students can put themselves in the strongest possible position to take full of advantage of the opportunities Cardiff. 

"I wish all the students the best for the future, as they make the transition into further education, employment and training." 

All results are provisional at the time of writing, based on data from all examinations boards.
