[image]As egos and armies clash in Syria the narrator of JD Smith'sThe Better of Two Menleads the reader through a much more personal war. This is the third book in the Overlord series - now available to buy as a box set on Amazon - the next three books are yet to come. Tristan and Iseult, JD's first novel, was a finalist for the Historical Novel Society Book of the Year Award 2015. Described as "vivid, violent and very poignant" by a recent reviewer, JD Smith's characterisation, fluid writing style and meticulous research paints a vibrant, dramatic picture of Syria at a time when Rome disintegrated under the weight of its own corruption. The early years of Zenobia are retold by her cousin, Zabdas, a slave who becomes a general. Zenobia is one of the great figures of Middle Eastern history, a Warrior Queen who has faded into the past despite leading one of the most threatening rebellions the Roman Empire ever faced. She is Syria's Boudicca and Zabdas is the ultimate narrator. His story follows Zenobia from intelligent young girl to imperious manipulator of kings and emperors, from the desert kingdom of Palmyra to Rome and back. Full of passion, intrigue and drama each of the three Overlord books successfully draws the reader in and grips them to the very last page.

Media Opportunities

As an author of a six-part series, JD Smith is full of ideas and not just when it comes to writing spellbinding historic fiction. As an award-winning cover designer, her work can be seen in bookshops around the world. And her role as a member of the author-publishing collective Triskele Books further cements her commitment to innovation and creativity in the literary industry. JD Smith is regularly invited to discuss book cover design trends, indie publishing, and how and why she chose to specialise in 3rdcentury Middle Eastern history for her six novel series. JD explains:"I'm passionate about bringing the past to life through authentic, lyrical storytelling of classic legends and real historical figures. The Overlord series is based on the Palmyrene Queen Zenobia, who ruled Syrian in the 3rdcentury - I'm often asked to comment on the current situation in Syria because of my interest in the country's incredible history. I wrote Tristan and Iseult after reading Bernard Cornwell's Arthurian trilogy. I loved the idea of a love that could last a lifetime. A true love that was never fully realised."
