In 2014 the Leach Pottery, St Ives and Cornish clothing company Seasalt announced the launch of the Seasalt Bursary. Now, following on from the success of last year’s bursary, a new apprentice for 2015 has secured the opportunity to train and study at the famous St. Ives studio.

The successful applicant, Matt Foster from St Ives, will train and work alongside Leach’s highly talented team of potters. He has been employed as a Head Chef at Hub and also works hanging exhibitions at the Millennium Gallery in St Ives. With no formal background in pottery but an obvious creative interest, Matt's artistic talents include baking, jam making, drawing, painting and making things from scratch, as well as swimming, surfing and climbing.

Matt says, ‘This is an unbelievable opportunity, to have the chance to do something that gives you satisfaction and that you enjoy as a job. I am proud to be a part of the Leach Pottery, which is such a big part of the art history of the town I grew up in.’

Seasalt Co-Founder Neil Chadwick says, ‘Seeing how well last year’s apprentice, Callum, has done at the Leach has been so rewarding, even more so now that he has secured a permanent position at the pottery. We’re delighted to be able to continue providing the backing for this scheme and to see new creative talent being cultivated.’

Leach Pottery Director Julia Twomlow says, ‘Once again we had a superb range of candidates for the post and were spoilt for choice, but Matt really impressed us all with his personality, enthusiasm and his practical as well as creative skills.  He was a clear winner and we look forward to welcoming him to the team.’

The Seasalt Bursary is providing funding towards the establishment of this position on an annual basis. For more information and to apply for the Seasalt Bursaryplease visit the Leach Pottery website: www.leachpottery.com/opportunities/
