My Motorcycle Checktop tips for used buyers May 2015: Ducati 1199 Panigale S ABS, Yamaha YBR 125 and Kawasaki ZX10R (D6/7F) praised

MyMotorcycleCheck.com - the UK's No.1 motorbike and scooter provenance website - has saved many a biker from making an expensive two-wheeled mistake. In these monthly bulletins its Valuation Team's expert reveals significant trends in the UK market and suggests three wise buys.

  • Highly desirable: Ducati 1199 Panigale S ABS

  • Safe bet: Yamaha YBR 125

  • Used star: Kawasaki ZX10R (D6/7F) 2005-2007

My Motorcycle Check's Rob Hobson commented: "For our highly desirable model this month we've chosen the Ducati 1199 Panigale S ABS. This great bike at the exotic end of the market looks destined to stay super popular despite competition from the new 1299 version. Remember, as well as revealing a bike's history, MyMotorcycleCheck.com also provides valuations - a great tool for haggling with dealers or private sellers.

"In terms of bikes that hold their value, safe bets don't come much safer than the Yamaha YBR 125. This is the ubiquitous commuter and learner bike used by many training schools. There are lots of them about but a good, well maintained one will run forever and hold its money. A word of warning though, many carry battle scars so do your homework and check before you buy."

"For our used star we've chosen the Kawasaki ZX10R (D6/7F) 2005-2007. Known somewhat unkindly as ‘the wheelbarrow' due to its twin under-seat pipes, this model is a bit of an ugly duckling. While the earlier C1 and C2H models make strong money, D6/7F bikes are often overlooked. If you want value for money, they're well worth considering. As always, do a history check to ensure the one you're looking at is what it claims to be."

As to market trends, Hobson commented: "With no major drop in values over the quieter months, we can expect retail values to firm up as demand increases.

"The new market maintained its positive start to the year with 16,282 machines registered on the 15 plate during March, an increase of more than 11% for the same month last year. Overall, the market is running at just under 12% up for the year to date. Of the top 10 models, four are over 125cc. The impressive Yamaha MT-09 Tracer, which fits well with current demands, sits in second place. The 651-1,000cc engine capacity sector is showing the biggest growth and the naked style sector continues to grab market share.

"The value of aftermarket accessories is an interesting factor. We've seen a couple of bikes recently with all the extras - suspension and exhaust upgrades, power commanders etc. - where the ticket price didn't reflect what must've been a substantial outlay. One of the joys of bike ownership is personalizing your ride. Just remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder - those pink anodised nuts and bolts won't be to everyone's liking when the time comes to sell!"
