Robinson Reed Layton supports new Pensions Regulators' advice on Auto Enrolment

Cornish accountancy firm Robinson Reed Layton, based in Truro, is urging local businesses to respond to recent advice from The Pensions Regulator regarding Auto Enrolment.

The Pension Regulator previously advised that businesses would receive their first communications in two stages; 12 months and then 3 months prior to their auto enrolment staging date.

However in a new bid to ensure businesses are ready for Auto Enrolment The Pensions Regulator has stepped up its communication and will be sending letters in the coming months to all small and micro businesses asking for a nominated point of contact to ensure they don't miss out on vital information.

Stephen Gainey, Partner at Robinson Reed Layton said, "We are encouraging clients who receive letters from The Pensions Regulator to act quickly and respond to the letters. We have had concerns over the lack of communication from The Pensions Regulator and so welcome this new direct communication to businesses across Cornwall."

"We do understand clients' concerns about the tone of the letters which has caused alarm, as, it states in bold type, "If you fail to comply with your duties you may be fined and/or prosecuted". However we support the idea behind the initiative and advise businesses to start planning as soon as they can to ensure they meet their staging date."

Even if the staging date for the businesses is not until 2017, The Pensions Regulator is asking that employers provide the details of a nominated point of contact now. Companies will need to complete an online form and use both a letter code and PAYE reference within a month of receiving the letter.

Stephen Gainey continued, "It is important that businesses understand the implications of the new rules and the effects they will have. We urge businesses to prepare early and be ready for their staging date."

If your staging date is during 2017 just under 900,000 employers will also stage in that year, therefore an average of 3,675 employers will be staging every day and we fear there will not be enough resources for pension providers to handle this number of employers attempting to stage."
