Patchwork Pâté reduces emissions with biomass heating system

Patchwork Pâté reduces emissions with biomass heating system

As part of an on going Sustainability plan, Patchwork Pâté, the British producer of handmade foods from the Welsh countryside, has installed a 90kW biomass pellet boiler heating system. The installation will reduce the company’s carbon output by 25 tonnes per year.

The biomass boiler generates heat by burning wood pellets in a high efficiency incinerator resulting in very little ash. Water is then fed through the biomass heating system to keep Patchwork’s premises and their 30 strong team, warm and toasty. To add to the sustainability the pellets are manufactured and supplied by local business, Clifford Jones Timber, which is less than 2miles from Patchwork Pate’s premises, keeping fuel transit miles low and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to the minimum.

Burning wood pellets produces lower carbon emissions than burning many other materials, including fossil fuels. As trees grow, they absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. Although rereleased during burning, the CO2 emissions are negligible compared to those produced when burning fossil fuels - and they can be reabsorbed by other plants.

This promotes responsible replenishment of biomass fuels and a sustainable future. Fossil fuels, by contrast, are produced over enormous periods are time, so are running out.

“We were delighted to be able to advise Patchwork Pate on their system and we were able minimise disruption by getting the hot water supply running within the week of their annual shutdown.” Said Graeme Raine, Owner of Rain or Shine, a local independent Alternative energy company from Bala in North Wales.

“We are so pleased with our new heating system. It has changed our comfort levels within many areas of the business and is providing plentiful amounts of hot water for our clean down process with the production area. On top of that, not only are we saving money but we’re also reducing our carbon footprint.” said Jenny Whitham, Managing Director at Patchwork Pate.

The new heating system reinforces Patchwork’s already impressive ethical and environmental credentials. As well as sourcing high quality ingredients responsibly, sustainably and locally, Patchwork makes products that are free from artificial additives, stabilisers, preservatives or hydrogenated fats.

Patchwork Pâté products include hummus, chocolate terrines, chutneys and soups. The company also sells spelt oat fingers, spelt blinis and its range of Ice Cream for Grownups - handmade with cream, milk, raw cane sugar and egg yolks.

Patchwork Pâté products are stocked by selected independent retailers across the United Kingdom. All products are available online at www.patchwork-pate.co.uk.

The company has a YouTube channel as well as Pinterest and Instagram pages offering recipes and tips for enjoying Patchwork Pâté products to the full.

The Patchwork Traditional Food Company Backgrounder

The Patchwork Traditional Food Company is an award winning company founded in 1982 by Margaret Carter.

A family business, the company began with a start-up fund of £9, invested from then single mother Margaret's housekeeping funds. In these early days Margaret would prepare pâtés in her home near Llangollen, North Wales and supply them to local pubs and restaurants.

Today the company occupies purpose built kitchens in nearby Ruthin where it employs 20 people.

Margaret's son, Rufus shares the same passion as his mother and now that Rufus is the managing director of the company he ensures that all the products are still made to Margaret's original recipes.

Now The Patchwork Traditional Food Company's range of products extends beyond pâtés and comprises of over seventy different items.

The pâté range itself includes chicken liver, game liver, fish, cheese and vegetarian, including seasonal limited editions. Traditional flavours are skilfully blended with the unexpected to produce unique tastes such as Chicken Liver, Chilli & Lemongrass.

Other Products produced by Patchwork include ranges of Hummus, Chocolate Terrines, Chutneys and Soups.
