Choosing the right membrane for the job

With the wide variety of structural waterproofing products now available, choosing the right product for any given application can be a bewildering challenge.

tremco illbruck offers a range of membranes and sealants tailored to specific applications and is constantly reviewing its offering to ensure the most comprehensive product portfolio.

On the face of it,TREMCO ES600 Moisture Vapour Suppressantwould appear to do much the same job as the company's traditional and well-provenTREMCO ES100 Single Coat Universal DPM.

Both are designed to suppress residual moisture in concrete and sand/cement subfloors with a relative humidity of up to 95-97%. Both are applied direct to a prepared, dust-free concrete surface and under normal circumstances, neither requires a primer. But there the similarity ends.

ES100 is a traditional two-part epoxy based product designed for single-coat application. It is applied using a notched trowel, followed by a long-handled ‘fluff-free' roller pre-wetted with ES100 to flatten-out the serration ridges.

Being a single-coat product, ES100 is quick and easy to apply. Once the product is applied, it must be left for up to 10 hours to cure before the floor finish can be laid.

ES600 is a new one-part water-based modified synthetic polymer emulsion that requires no pre-mixing and is ready to use straight from the bottle.

Just like ES100, it normally requires no primer and can be applied direct to a clean, sound concrete substrate. However, unlike ES100, it requires two coats instead of one. Despite this, however, its rapid curing time makes it a better choice when early satisfactory laying of floor coverings is required.

Whereas ES100 is trowelled-on, ES600 is applied using a roller. At 20oC, the product dries in just one hour, but the second coat can be applied as soon as the first coat is touch-dry - after as little as 15 - 30 minutes. The membrane will then cure in just 120 minutes or even less, depending on ambient temperatures.

For projects where quick application is desirable, but rapid curing is not a factor, ES100 has the edge over ES600. But on work-sites where drying times are critical, the fast-curing ES600 will prove a wiser choice.
