Personal trainer takes trophy in national bikini contest

Nine months of rigorous training has paid off for North Yorkshire personal trainer Katherine Bray, whose efforts to get her own body into peak physical condition have earned her a podium place in a national competition.

The 37-year-old mum-of-two from Pickering took part in the Fitness Model Comps World Championship event last weekend in Hoddeson, Hertfordshire, pitting herself against some of the nation’s most sculpted bodies. And Katherine couldn’t quite believe what she was hearing when her name was announced for third place in the Diva category (ladies aged over 35) of the contest.

“Even though I was hoping I would place I wasn’t really expecting it, I was so surprised,” said Katherine, “but it feels amazing and it’s nice to receive this recognition, it makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

Two gym sessions a day for five days a week, plus Katherine’s personal training sessions with clients, as well as a highly nutritional diet have all resulted in an outstandingly strong, fit and toned body. She said: “It’s been gruelling at times but it feels so rewarding, and it’s as much about your mind as your body. Building a healthy, strong body can have a positive impact on your mental health too, stimulating a sense of personal growth and self-confidence.”

These events offer women an empowering environment too, according to Katherine. “It doesn’t feel competitive,” she said. “It takes masses of self-discipline to get here and everyone is full of mutual respect and admiration. I’ve made a lot of friends in this network, there’s always such a supportive and friendly atmosphere at the contests.”

Naturally having these personal goals complements Katherine’s business as someone who helps others plan and reach their own health and fitness objectives. “I think seeing me achieve my ambitions inspires people to believe in themselves and have faith in their own diet and exercise programmes,” she added.

Katherine tailors food and workout programmes for each individual client, including a 90-day eating plan to help people shed the pounds in a healthy, controlled way.

She said: “My clients soon appreciate that there’s no overnight quick fix, it takes consistent training and dedication. The good news is I’m there to support and encourage them for the duration of their journey.”

Katherine will be taking another turn in the spotlight at the end of April, at a charitable Elite Body fitness model and bodybuilding event being held in Worksop. “I’ve now competed in five events,” she added, “and I’m definitely hungry for more!”
