Mission Critical Communications For Hi-Speed Trains at the Winter Olympic Games 2018
Softil's award-winning BEEHD software development kit (SDK) is being used byHoimyung Corporationto build next generation 3GPP MCPTT standard compliant mission-critical push-to-talk communication terminals for use in South Korea's new hi-speed railway link.
The new rail link has just entered service for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics 2018. Each day, 35 high-speed trains bring more than 50,000 athletes and representatives, alongside approximately 19,000 visitors per day from around the world from the Incheon International Airport to the Pyeongchang Olympic site in just under two hours.
"South Korea's new hi-speed rail link brings together some of the most advanced technologies available today," saysKelvin Soh, CTO of Hoimyung ICT."Our decision to use Softil's BEEHD technology to build next generation communicationterminals was very simple ... nothing else comes close."
Hoimyung built the terminals usingLTE-R technology, a version of LTE specifically for the mission-critical operational and maintenance services of railway operators. The BEEHD framework is LTE-R compatible and will enable Hoimyung's Train Radio Communication System (TRCS) terminals to deliver stable voice calls, video calls and data communications on trains running at speeds in excess of 250kmh. It alsoprovidestracking train information and railroad guideto the engine driver.
LTE-R was developed for next-generation mission-critical communication dedicated for railway operation and maintenance. What sets 4G or 5G based LTE-R apart from the analogue or 2G GSM based technologies is that they provide stable multimedia services. Compared to the one-to-one voice call service between the control center, station employee and the train engineer that has been available so far, LTE-R technology enables multimedia-based group call/SMS services on top of the voice call service.
The technology better equips rail operators in case of an accident because it transmits real-time video of the station to the central control center. Additionally, real-time group/individual communication is made possible between the train engineer and control centre.
