How to clean your sink

Rinsing your kitchen sink after use is great practice but it takes a little more effort to really get to grips with stains, grease and limescale. BLANCO's five-step guide will soon have your sink sparkling clean, without the use of harmful chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

1) Stock up

Don't be tempted by all the advertisements for hardcore cleaners on TV. All you really need is a normal non-abrasive household cleaner and a soft sponge or microfibre cloth. Perfect for all sink types - stainless steel, composite stone and ceramic - regular use will remove daily detritus such as tea stains and grease with ease.

2) Call in the big guns

If ground-in stains are proving stubborn, invest in some strong cleaning agent. Powerful, non-bleach cleaners are suitable for use on all sink types and a little goes a long way.

3) Kick limescale into touch

To tackle a build-up of limescale, fill the bowl with hot water and add a dishwasher tablet, or washing detergent, and soak for at least 3-4 hours (ideally overnight). Rinse the sink, then clean with a sponge and wipe dry.

4) Keep blockages at bay

To keep your sink draining freely, every six weeks sprinkle 6 tbsp of baking soda down the plug, then add 100ml of white vinegar. Allow it to fizz for a few minutes, and then carefully pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain.

5) To scour or not to scour?

While stainless steel and ceramic don't respond well to scouring - the surface will scratch and dull - composite stone, which is made from high levels of granite, will benefit from the coarser action of a scouring pad. Avoid wire or steel pads though; a plastic mesh scourer is best.
