GateHouse Telecom in Trailblazing Cyber Hardening Initiative

First-mover enterprises examine live cyber vulnerability of satellite communications equipment off-air

According to research firm Gartner, cybersecurityspendingon connected products and services exceeded more than $80 billion in 2016 and as the IoT revolution accelerates, expenditure is expected to increase to $1 trillion over the next five years.

Rising cyber crime will demand increased testing of products and services.Every IT developer will become cyber hardened in protecting and defending apps, data, devices, infrastructure and people. And many will turn to off-air testing of products to check their risk of exposure to cyber crime before they enter live service.

"As a leading supplier of test products and services for terminals and applications used in Inmarsat's BGAN network,it is within GateHouse Telecom's remit to join the fight against cyber crime," says Thomas S. Jensen, Director, GateHouse Telecom. "With our off-air test tools, enterprises can apply COTS vulnerability scanning and penetration test tools to eliminate the risk of their products being exposed to cyber crime during live test campaigns."

Called theBGAN Application Tester(BAT), the tool simulates a sandbox network environment enabling enterprises to test terminals and applications against any potential cyber attack off-air and many other tests that would not be possible during live network sessions.

BAT eliminates costly test air-time budgets and allows BGAN vendors to fully demo BGAN, FBB or SBB applications and terminals at trade shows and other offsite presentations with the complete terminal and radio interface being exercised by re-creation of network load scenarios in a controlled environment.

The tool connects to terminals on the L-Band RF interface and enables the terminal to connect and use BGAN services as if it was pointed at the Inmarsat satellites. It simulates the ground station and IP connection to any backend service or Internet connection.
