Brewery founder and farmer shortlisted for local business award

A Wold Newton based brewery founder and farmer has been named as one of two enterprising business owners in the final of theHull Daily MailBusiness Awards' Entrepreneur of the Year category.

Tom Mellor, of T.Mellor and Son, has been shortlisted in the category that aims to find the individual who has had a profound effect on both business and the local community.

Tom took over the family farm in 1981, expanded the acreage and introduced new crops before researching other ventures to increase income. Tom took his first steps into diversification at the beginning of the 2000s when he established the brewery on the 600 acre farm site with wife, Gill.

He said: "Wold Top is built upon the resources from the land the farm sits on, and we endeavoured to make the most of what we had in order to secure the farm's future.

"We have worked hard to sustain and grow the brewery business as well as establishing our other bottling and events businesses and more recently, a whisky distillery.

"I'm very proud to be shortlisted in the entrepreneur category, and it goes without saying that it's as a result of having great teams to work with."

He was selected for shortlisting after impressing judges with his innovation in starting the brewery. They also described him as ‘a real character', believing it is this combination that has led to the success of Wold Top Brewery, Agricola Bottling and Muddy Souls Events.

The Hull Daily Mail Business Awards, now in its 17th year, celebrates the success of individuals, businesses and organisations based in the region across a number of categories.

The winners will be announced at the ceremony taking place on November 16 at the KCOM stadium when businessman and TV personality Dave Fishwick will present the awards.
