11,000 new city homes by 2022

A Cardiff Council report has revealed how more than 11,000 new homes are anticipated to be built in the city over the next five years.

The first annual monitoring report of the authority's Local Development Plan, which was adopted last year, also shows an expected uplift in the rate new homes are delivered to help tackle the growing housing need in the city.

Over the past 10 years, a total of 9,242 homes have been built in Cardiff but that figure is anticipated to be surpassed over the next five years with over 11,000 homes set for completion by 2022 according to the latest land supply estimates which excludes student housing.

The Council is working with developers to help deliver sites in the Local Development Plan along with new supporting infrastructure in a phased manner. Through this partnership approach, some 2,000 homes could be achieved annually seeing growth of the housing stock between 1-1.5% per annum.

Welcoming the boost to Cardiff's housing provision, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: "Cardiff is a thriving city with one of the fastest growing populations in the UK so addressing demand of all types of housing across the city is vital.

It's very encouraging to see that the city is set to return to significantly higher rates of delivering new homes.

"We are also one of only a handful of local authorities in the UK who have committed to building new Council homes, and have set a target to deliver 1,000 new council homes over the next five years.

"With more than 8,000 applicants on the waiting list for social housing in the city - 4,600 of whom are in significant housing need, it's important that we are delivering more secure, affordable and decent homes across Cardiff."

Cardiff's LDP annual monitoring report will be considered by Cabinet on Thursday, September 21 and once approved, submitted to Welsh Government by October 31.
