Flavoured rapeseed oil producer creates perfect blend for Great Taste

Flavoured rapeseed oil producer creates perfect blend for Great Taste

A North Yorkshire family business that has created a range of British rapeseed oil-based products using its own farm-produced oil is celebrating a double win at the Great Taste Awards.

Charlie and Ivy's garlic, ginger and chilli, and garlic, oregano and balsamic bread dippers were both awarded a gold star at the Guild of Fine Foods Great Taste Awards, and are the only ones from the North Yorkshire region to have gained accolades in the ‘Rapeseed Oil, plain and flavoured'category.

Often described as the ‘Oscars' of the food world, the prestigious Great Taste scheme is the world's largest and most trusted food and drink awards.

The bread dippers, made using a base of cold-pressed Yorkshire-produced rapeseed oil, have been developed for flavour and versatility, Charlie and Ivy's Jennie Palmer said.

She runs the business with farmer husband, Adam and the business is named after their young children.

"We have always concentrated on creating excellent flavour combinations to make people stop and think, ‘Wow, this is incredible', and we wanted to see whether our bread dippers could compete against some of the best out there.

"Having these stars from Great Taste is a huge achievement and we're so proud because everything we create is very personal to us in our family business."

Suitable for vegetarians and vegans, the dippers can also be added to pasta, pizza and salads. A 200ml bottle costs £6 or a trio of the dippers can be bought for £14.

Jennie added: "This gives us a huge boost going forward as we can be confident in our flavour blends, because we know we like eating them but to have the validation from judges in one of the world's toughest food judging schemes is amazing."

Judges commented on the ‘stunning amber liquid gold' appearance of the garlic, ginger and chilli bread dipper and the versatility of the product which they said had a ‘really good balance of kick of chilli, freshness of ginger and sweetness from the garlic'.

They were impressed by ‘sweetness and measured acetic' and the ‘lasting flavour of the oregano' in the garlic, oregano and balsamic bread dipper.

There were 12, 366 products entered into Great Taste this year and only 35 percent of entries were accredited. 500 judges, comprised of judges, buyers, food writers and retailers, blind taste-tested the products between March and July.

Charlie and Ivy's is a stand-alone lifestyle brand that uses the rapeseed oil that Adam and Jennie produce for sister company, Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil, on the family farm near Malton, North Yorkshire.

In addition to their range of bread dippers, Charlie and Ivy's also produce mayonnaises, dressings, flavoured rapeseed oil and sell natural rapeseed oil.

The range is available online atwww.charlieandivys.co.ukand through selected stockists nationwide.
