A new consultant orthopaedic surgeon has joined the expanding team at Airedale hospital. James Tyler, originally from Burley in Wharfedale, has recently begun working at Airedale hospital as part of an expanding orthopaedic team.

Educated at Sedbergh and at St Andrew's and Manchester universities before training in orthopaedics in South East England, James specialised in upper limb as part of his surgical fellowship training in Perth, Australia. He returned to the UK in 2016 for further upper limb fellowship training at St George's hospital, London, before taking up his new post at Airedale.

The current team at Airedale consists of one shoulder surgeon, David Bowe, so James' appointment creates an upper limb unit bolstering provision and doubles the shoulder and elbow capacity in the unit. An additional hand specialist will join the team in September to replace Chris Wray who is retiring after 27 years.

Clinical lead for Orthopaedics Gethin Thomas said:

"We had some excellent surgeons applying to join us at Airedale as an eighth consultant. James was the best of a strong bunch of candidates and we are really pleased to have him as the newest member of our team. He will help us to deliver a great orthopaedic service for the area."

James Tyler was keen to return to the area because of the quality of life on offer, and he recognised that the expanding unit is forward thinking and has historically performed well. He also has personal connections with Airedale from the past - he came here as a schoolboy for work experience in 1995 and again in for six months in 2006 as a senior house officer where he got basic surgical experience under Mr Wray.

James enjoys cycling and rugby and lives in Ilkley with his wife Ruth, a paediatrician, and their two young children.
