James Legal is preparing for the second in its series of masterclasses aimed at supporting business opportunity in Hull and surrounding region during this Hull City of Culture 2017 year.
Up to 100 businesses are expected to attend its ‘Back to the future’ event which will celebrate how far Hull has come in the past 40 years, and showcase the promise that exists in up-and-coming industries from digital to food, not to mention sporting talent.
Taking place at the Hallmark Hotel in North Ferriby on Wednesday June 28, the event will also include inspirational keynote presentations from a selection of speakers, as well as displays from cutting edge local businesses, open networking and an opportunity to gain help and advice from James Legal’s 16 campaign partners, who will also be present on the day.
The firm, based in Hedon Road, in East Hull, has organised the masterclass as part of its James Legal – The Business 2017 campaign, which is designed to act as a catalyst for helping the region’s companies to seize the opportunity this special City of Culture year represents for Hull and its environs.
The campaign also includes a Business Booster competition, with a prize fund worth over £40,000 to be shared between two standout businesses that need support in reaching their next stage of growth.
James Legal has teamed up with a range of partners to run the campaign and competition, including the Yorkshire & Humber arm of the Department for International Trade, the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership, Sirius, the Hull & Humber Chamber of Trade, as well as local businesses including Computanet, Elliott’s Hygiene Ltd, Peacock Finance, The Business Culture Hull, Sales Lead Genie, 360 Accountants, Fifty Squid Video, The Marketplace, Arrival Design, Yorkshire Bank, Dare Greatly and By Tracy Fletcher Ltd PR.
Digital entrepreneur Kit Hargreaves, who runs the KlicknTap Media agency, specialising in a blend of creative online web design and cutting edge technology such as 3D visualisation, is among the speaker line up. Kit also works closely with Youth Enterprise in the region, from the OneSixOne Hull Youth Support Trust centre in High Street and as vice-chair of the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank, helping promising young businesspeople to get started.
He said: “There is a creative undercurrent of real potential in Hull which is unique from anywhere else. We have young men and women coming up with all sorts of innovations – including apparently simple technological solutions to typical issues we face in daily life.
“There is an incredible amount of potential here but those young entrepreneurs need a support framework to help them take their ideas out beyond the environs of Hull and really put the city on the map with the same kind of reputation enjoyed by the Manchesters and Liverpools of this world.
“I’ll be talking more about those opportunities and needs at the James Legal masterclass and I think it’s a really great thing the company is doing to bring businesses together to highlight issues like these and get a range of organisations together to find solutions.”
Meanwhile, Maureen, who is also a passionate local advocate for young people in enterprise, will be talking about her experience as only the second female businesswoman ever to set up in the area, 40 years ago. Maureen, who is sponsor of Women’s Enterprise in the Humber, a Council Member with the Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank, and owner of Durban Ltd, will be giving her personal view on how things have changed and, again, what she believes the future holds for the local business community and the Hull & Humber region in general.
Katie Milner is another example of a fantastic Hull youth expert. The record-breaking junior racing driver last year became the first girl ever to win the Junior Saloon Car Championship. The 17-year-old from Huggate, whose dad also happens to be two-times British rally championship Jonny Milner, has now moved up into the Ginetta Championship series, bringing her one step closer to her ultimate goal of become a pro racing driver. She’ll be bringing along her impressive Ginetta G5 car and talking about her ingredients for success and her personal story of making it as a girl in a largely male environment.
James Legal owner & MD Nick Miller added: “We’re running these masterclasses as a vehicle for connecting businesses, and knowledge sharing, to help create fresh opportunities during what is an extra-special year for commerce in the Hull & Humber region.
“We’re hugely grateful for the businesses that are supporting our campaign in general, and our Business Booster competition with its incredible prizes and our masterclasses – it just shows what can be achieved when great minds come together.”
