‘There is no simpler joy for me than buying a bunch of flowers down on St Ives harbour, and taking them home to pop in a jug and paint.' Emma Williams, 2017

In this new collection of paintings, on show throughout August, Emma Williams captures the essence of her own relationship with the coastal town of St Ives, exploring the area's unique landscape and celebrating her passion for the distinctive ceramics found in the town. The proximity of the sea, the open space and calming influence of the Cornish light in her works evoke a feeling that is pure St Ives. Known for her use of flattened perspective and rhythmic composition, Emma's paintings reflect her background in printed textile design and bring a contemporary edge to the classic genres of still life and landscape. Pairing interior spaces with framed views of beach, town and sea she works in a distinctly decorative style, where geometric, almost cut-out areas of colour are balanced against intense bursts of floral detail.

Accompanying this exhibition is a collection of works by Japanese ceramicist Yuta Segawa who specialises in hand thrown miniature pottery. Using more than five hundred original glazes, his tiny pots address issues of the physical relationship between the artist and his work, testing the limits of what the human hand can create on such a small scale.

This exhibition will be on show from 12 August to 2 September at New Craftsman Gallery, St Ives.
