DUNDAS SHOPPING CENTRE –

HELPING TO TACKLE LONELINESS IN OLDER PEOPLE

Chat Over Tea and Cake at Dundas Indoor Market for Over 50s

Wednesday 17 May 9.30am to 11.30am

Dundas Shopping Centre and Indoor Market is helping to tackle loneliness and social isolation among older people in Middlesbrough.

As part of its Community Programme, Dundas Indoor Market has linked up with Ageing Better Middlesbrough to host regular monthly events for people over 50 in Jean’s Kitchen, the café at the heart of the market.

The get-togethers take place on the third Wednesday morning of each month from 9.30am – 11.30am and start with a chat over tea and cake.  They are designed to bring people together to encourage new friendships and re-kindle old acquaintances, as well as telling them about other social and physical activities run by Ageing Better Middlesbrough. The first event takes place on Wednesday 17 May.

“We had more than 40 people at our pilot event, sharing memories about their lives in Middlesbrough and we hope to get similar numbers at our monthly get-togethers,” says Dundas Market Manager David Harris.  “Everybody is welcome.”

Rebecca Hughes at Ageing Better Middlesbrough says: “We are very pleased to work with the Dundas Shopping Centre and Indoor Market as part of our mission to inspire people aged 50 and over to have a happy, healthy, active, and a more socially connected later life.”

Ageing Better Middlesbrough is a six year, £6 million Big  Lottery funded programme working to reduce loneliness and social isolation for people aged 50 and over in Middlesbrough. It is made up a partnership of several different organisations and projects that are working together to support and empower local older people.

Car parking is available in the 178-space Dundas Shopping Centre basement car park, accessed off Wilson Street.
