PSYCHOTHERAPIST OFFERS KEY ADVICE FOR EATING DISORDERS WEEK 2017

Eating Disorders Week takes place from Monday 27 February and mindset coach and Gloucestershire-based psychotherapist Lorna Denton is reaching out to those who suffer from a range of eating disorders to offer advice and help.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week is an international awareness event, fighting the myths and misunderstandings that surround anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder and EDNOS (Eating disorder not otherwise specified).

Lorna Denton works work regularly with clients who are suffering with an eating disorder of some kind, with symptoms ranging from anorexia, bulimia or binge eating. She says: ‘Regardless of the form it takes, the effect over a person is devastating physically, emotionally and mentally. There is no respite for the sufferer as their issues are in the forefront of their mind all of the time, unable to just switch off even for one day.

"But one thing that is common in each case I see is a very high level of perfectionism and expectation that leaves the person never feeling good enough. So, a vital part of recovery is to build self-esteem and help them begin to feel happy with who they are. We then go on to learning how to manage all or nothing thinking and beliefs around control."

One of Lorna's recent case studies was a successful business woman and mum of two in her early 30s who had battled with bulimia since her teens. Although outwardly she seemed to have it all, her issues were a constant struggle as she tried to keep her head above water. Lorna shares what she had to say after six sessions of mindset coaching:

'As someone who has struggled with weight issues and eating disorders for the last 15 years I wanted to say thank you. I wanted to say thank you, because for months I haven't weighed myself. I haven't stepped on the weighing scales and agonised because the number doesn't say what I want it to. Anyone else might think "so what?", but for me it is hugely significant and a real lightbulb moment. Undertaking mindset coaching has changed my life immeasurably for the better."
