21 year old finance manager with Coventry engineering specialist wins young professional award.

A young and ambitious finance manager from Coventry engineering specialist company Marchant Cain Design has won the YoungPro award, aimed at young professionals.

Tom Meredith began his 18-month Business Administration apprenticeship with the company when he was 17 years old. Three years later he is now about to take one of the highest professional qualifications in finance - CIMA (the Chartered Institute of Management Accountant).

Tom has self-studied to gain the knowledge needed to take exams with support from Marchant Cain. To date he has sat and passed 14 exams and is now at Management Accountancy Advanced Diploma level.

His award was in the category of Finance incorporating Banking, organised by Coventry and Warwickshire First, a forum for professional and financial services firms in the region run by members for its members.

Tom said: "I was surprised to win as I was one of the youngest. I am really pleased to get the award for a number of reasons. One was it backed my decision to become an apprentice rather than go to university, and this has paid off for me with MarchantCain supporting me through my training and studying.

"Being able to train on the job and study has been a real bonus. I am learning about the business which is very exciting and a great place to work. If I had a degree in accountancy I would still have had to do the CIMA exams anyway. Getting paid, learning new skills, meeting new people and being able to study has been the best of all worlds."

Tom is responsible for all of the financial management and strategy together with resource planning and purchasing.  He also handles all the IT in the business including sourcing, managing the installation and training other staff on new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Product Data Management systems.

Pam Cain, Director of Marchant Cain said Tom had fitted in right away.

She said: "Within six months he was looking after our accounts. He knew what needed to be done and did it. He is now responsible for producing profit and loss and cashflow forecasts and undertaking the planning for people and parts. We are so pleased he has received the recognition he deserves with this award. He works hard at his studies too and is always coming to us with new ideas."

MarchantCain Design celebrated ten years in business last year. The company specialises inmechatronic systems including active aerodynamics, window regulators and glass technologies and electrochromatic glass.

As winner of his category Tom will now go forward to the Young Pro 2017 competition, He will be competing against two other young professionals who have won different categories. The competition is to find the overall winner. The event will take place at the Ricoh arena in Coventry on April 6 2017.
