NewVIc future coaches receive honourable mention at London Sports Awards

11 of the 60 strong NewVIc Sports Leadership Academy members successfully completed their FA Level 1 coaching qualification on 15 January. They, along with their peers, were recognised with an honourable mention (highly commended) for their outstanding commitment to community volunteering at the London Sports Awards ceremony on Thursday 19 January, hosted at Indigo at the O2.

Achieving this qualification requires a great deal of dedication, as well as time and effort. The students attended the course over 5 weekends, during which they were required to conduct individual coaching and finish workbook assessments.

Since September, the NewVIc Sports Leaders have completed over 180 sports coaching and leadership qualifications between them as part of this Nationally Accredited Academy. These students volunteer at 20 different schools, clubs and organisations across the borough each week, and have already contributed over 400 hours of volunteering in the community.

NewVIc's Sport Academy Manager, Beth Harris, says: "I am delighted for the students. Their hard work and enthusiasm has got them through a very demanding qualification, which will be so useful to them in their careers.

"With 14 other students already having achieved similarly challenging Level 1 coaching qualifications in Badminton, Basketball, Athletics and Cricket this year, we're very proud of the contribution these students are making to the surrounding community."

NewVIc's Sport Academy has gone from strength to strength since opening in 2010, winning a string of awards for its students both as teams and individuals.

NewVIc's next open day is on Saturday 4 February (9.30 - 12.30) at the Prince Regent Lane campus.
