Oxford University Press publish book by CNWL Psychiatrist

Dr Andrew Hodgkiss, a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist for CNWL, based at The Royal Marsden (inChelsea and in Sutton) has had his book published.

Biological Psychiatry of Cancer and Cancer Treatment was published this week by the Oxford University Press.

The book describes how certain cancers, and certain cancer treatments, can affect a patient's mental health. The emphasis is on the biological mechanisms by which psychiatric symptoms can arise, rather than the understandable psychological distress associated with cancer and its treatment. The book describes the prevention, assessment and treatment of these psychiatric effects.

It is aimed at oncologists, palliative medicine clinicians, cancer clinical nurse specialists, liaison psychiatrists, and the ‘experts by experience' and patient advocates in the field.

The foreword is written by Professor Martin Gore, who is Professor of Cancer Medicine at The Institute of Cancer Research, and a Consultant Medical Oncologist at The Royal Marsden.

Dr Hodgkiss said, "I've worked in this field since 1995 and learned that psychiatric symptoms, sometimes very severe, can arise from certain tumours and treatments. Based on clinical experience, and review of the literature, the book tries to understand this, the better to prevent and manage it."

Claire Murdoch, CNWL's Chief Executive said, "It's a great day when real expertise in new areas is set out for clinicians to learn from; it comes from experience and that helps patients, who will be really interested in the book. That said, I also wanted to congratulate Andrew; it's brilliant!"

Dr Hodgkiss, and speakers from Oxford, Manchester, Cambridge and London, will talk about the topic at a conference on Thursday 1 December (Psychiatry of Cancer, Oncology and Palliative Medicine), at The Royal Marsden Education and Conference Centre, Stewart's Grove, London SW3 6JJ
