How to reclaim your personal time; National work-life week

AsQ, a new app designed to make light work of sourcing trades people and services are offering up their top tips for keeping Britain's work-life balance in check ahead of National work-life week 2016 (Monday 3rd October - Friday 7th October 2016).

The National work-life initiative was launched by the charity, Working Families, in order to raise awareness of the importance of ‘flexible working'. The Modern Families Index 2015 showed that 27% of parents are unhappy with their work-life balance, and 41% mentioned that their work-life balance was becoming more stressful than ever.

Imran Arif co-founder of AsQ said, "City living can make a person feel alive, but don't forget to live. I think it's really important to keep your work life balance in check, but it can be so hard these days. They should both complement each other but one should never take over. Unless you're fulfilled with life, you won't be fulfilled with work and vice versa. Work hard, play hard, and don't lose track of the things you love".

Both Imran and Irfan Arif, the founders of the app which launched earlier this year, live and work full time in the city. They believe that in order to reclaim your personal time there are a few tips you should follow:

  • Put down the technology, "As you come through the door of your personal space, be sure to leave technology there, well at least try to. Due to the advances in technology your home can easily become transformed into your office without you even noticing".

  • Learn to say ‘NO', "Work emails, reports, personal deadlines etc. have a tendency to creep into your home life - you need to give yourself the power to say ‘No', and leave what wasn't done in your working day until you are back to work tomorrow".

  • You are not ‘On-Call', "Unless you get paid overtime for working out of hours, don't do it. Trust us, no one wants to receive an email in the middle of the night about the business report that is due in three days' time, and you will be lucky if the receiver replies. Put the phone down, and spend some time doing the things you love most, even if that is just sleeping".

  • Leave work on time, "A really simple way to regain control of your work-life balance is to leave work on time, but leaving your desk and work on time means you know exactly when ‘your time' starts, and work ends. Us Brits are so used to staying over, that Working Families, the charity who formed ‘National Work-Life Week, have dedicated the 5th October this year as ‘Go Home On Time' day".

  • Reflection, "Remember WHY you go to work... Is it to pay for your home, pay the bills, to make a future for your family? Don't live to work, work to live. If you spend all of your time working, you will miss out on all of the things you love about life. There's a great saying that we think sums it up; never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life"

  • Outsource everything, "Rather spend an hour playing with your children than slaving over a hot stove or cleaning? Fancy going out for the weekend rather than doing the gardening? The solution is to outsource those jobs to someone else if you can afford it. You are also helping someone to make a living for themselves too, which is an added bonus".

During National Work-Life Week 2016, Imran and Irfan Arif are encouraging the great British public to outsource what they can in order to make the most of a perfect work-life balance.
