Motorists doing their homework on vehicle repairs

More and more motorists are doing their homework before visiting a garage, foregoing price as the biggest contributing factor behind their decision, new research has found.

Trust My Garage (TMG), the only independent code exclusively for independent garages, has found that 74% of motorists research garages online before booking a service or MOT, and just 21% of drivers select a garage purely on price.

The organisation quizzed a number of motorists in the UK to gain an understanding of what the public view as important when selecting a garage, discovering that 79% of drivers rely mostly on word of mouth when choosing a garage, and 39% seek out customer reviews. Surprisingly, only 34% of motorists are aware of The Chartered Trading Standard Institute's Consumer Code Approval Scheme despite 77% stating that garages which are a member of such a scheme are more likely to win their trust and loyalty.

Trust My Garage is the only scheme to be approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute's Consumer Code Approval Scheme, which is exclusively for independent garages. As a result, customers who use a TMG member for motor repairs or servicing, gain access to additional protection above and beyond their consumer rights, including a clear complaints procedure and access to the National Conciliation Service, TMG's alternative dispute resolution provider. The organisation has always demanded that its member garages adopt a clear pricing strategy and operate transparency, initiatives that 67% and 42% of motorists respectively, stated that would encourage customer loyalty.

Terry Gibson, from Trust My Garage commented:"It's great to see that so many consumers are now researching garages before they visit, and are no longer being swayed by price alone. By taking the time to research garages online and reading existing reviews, consumers are able to make a more informed choice when it comes to selecting a garage they can trust.

"As a result of gaining approval from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute's Consumer Code Approval Scheme, we are now able to offer motorists increased peace of mind.. By offering motorists extended protection and increased transparency, we are confident that our CTSI code status will see us play an instrumental role in furthering trust between motorists and independent garages."

CTSI's consumer codes approval scheme protects consumer interests by setting out the principles of effective customer service and protection. As a part of a CTSI Approved Code, TMG members can now demonstrate that they are trusted independent businesses and are contributing to improving service standards for the industry.
