The Birth of Now: The cause and effect of the greatest change in historyby Jamie Cawley

How is it that the Great Pyramid in Egypt was the tallest building in the world for 5,000 years, until just over 100 years ago, but now can't even make it into the top 10,000 tallest buildings today?

"You will never see history the same way again after reading this."

[image]The Birth of Now is a completely original, non-fiction book that seeks to understand why the industrial revolution had such a profound effect on all elements of human society - not just work and industry - and what we can learn from The Birth of Now. Jamie predicts that The Birth of Now will end in between 80 and 200 years...from that point society will stop changing as it currently is and take on an entirely different form! Written in an accessible, engaging style to appeal to students, historians, philosophers, fans of non-fiction alike, the launch of The Birth of Now will be celebrated in the incredible Dyers Hall, offering a unique chance to see this great hall and its charters dating back to the 15thcentury (access by the general public is forbidden outside of special events). The hall of the Dyers was originally located west of London Bridge, but was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. The current hall, designed by Charles Dyer and constructed in 1839-40, is at 11-13 Dowgate Hill in the City of London.

Life in 1750 was not noticeably different to life in 3000BC. Sumerian temples had drains; Louis XIV's palace at Versailles did not. A Sumerian sailing boat and HMS Victory, almost 5,000 years apart, are both wood and fabric constructions, powered by wind. 100 years later and the steel and steam-turbine HMS Dreadnought has no resemblance to either. The change went far beyond just industry, not only to agriculture, construction and services but also to education, the vote and the ideal of equality. The whole 5,000-year period before this change we call 'Then', the period after, 'Now'. What caused 'Now' to be born? The book leads us on a chronological journey through human development and suggests a controversial view on how humanity will continue to develop (or not as the case may be). The Birth of Now develops the ideas that Jamie Cawley established in Beliefs, his break-through book published in 2015, which examines and explores the themes that link the big 10 human belief structures: from capitalism to Judaism, environmentalism to Islam. Jamie Cawley's highly original books stem from 40+ years of independently studying religion and ideology.

Possible talking points:
How long can the speed of change witnessed since the Birth of Now continue?

What will stop the period we recognise as ‘Now'?

Why have historians not previously looked for the true cause of the Birth of Now?

"The Birth of Now is a brilliant piece of persuasion, excitingly argued and compulsively readable. It shows for the first time what triggered the birth of the modern world and its consequences for us today."
