CNWL appoints new Medical Director

Dr Con Kelly, is the new Medical Director at CNWL, responsible for clinical leadership for more than 500 doctors in mental health, sexual health, addictions, palliative care, dentistry and the Pharmacy team. He starts in May.

He replaces Dr Alex Lewis who is retiring.

Con qualified in Ireland 30 years ago before moving to London to train in psychiatry, where he specialised in older adult care.

Since joining CNWL in 2001 he has been Clinical Director for Older Adults and Acute Services, Divisional Medical Director and recently has taken up the post of Joint Medical Director for the Trust. He was Medical Director City & Hackney NHS Trust, 1998 to 2000.

He lives in central London and is married to another psychiatrist with twin boys who were the stimulus for his week-end career as manager of a local youth football team.

Dr Kelly said, "I'm delighted to be Medical Director at CNWL; I've worked here for 15 years so know the services and patients very well. That said, it's not just business as usual; we have much to do and challenges to face so I very much look forward to listening to all clinicians across the width and breadth of CNWL in the coming months."

Claire Murdoch, Chief Executive, said, "Con shone out from the field in the selection process - the interviewing panel included external assessors and a carer of someone with mental illness, so this is a solid appointment. CNWL has a very substantial medical body across many specialisms and our way of working, providing expert care as close to home as possible, is the future of the NHS and I'm confident Con will be an inspirational leader. Congratulations Con!"
