Shepherd's Huts and Summer Houses - creating the idyllic English garden retreat by Blackdown Shepherd Huts

Shepherd's huts are very much part of English history, and Blackdown Shepherd Huts have been inspired by the traditional shepherd's huts of yesteryear to create the ultimate dream huts for the English garden for Summer 2016.

Built to last for generations to come, Blackdown create their huts in their workshop in Ilminster, Somerset. The huts come with an oak-clad or metal-clad exterior and include a bathroom and a kitchen, or simply a log-burner. Recent customers have purchased shepherd huts for a range of purposes - from summer houses and glamping businesses, to saunas and garden offices.

Will Vickery, who owns and runs Blackdown Shepherd Huts, says: ‘The English garden is a place that people feel is an extension of their home and our shepherd huts are the ultimate celebration of a quintessentially English style."

Emma Warren is a customer of Blackdown, and she purchased her hut to create Dimpsey Glamping in Somerset. Dimpsey is now a 5* luxury retreat, and Emma describes her idyllic hut as "an all-in experience helping busy people to get some quality time together". Based on Emma's farm in the Blackdown Hills in Somerset, the hut is also a family retreat, used as an extension of their English farmhouse to create some mindful space for Emma, her husband, or their teenage boys.

Historically, shepherd's huts were mobile structures which could be moved around the field to give the shepherd shelter as he tended his flock through the lambing season.  Currently, however, Blackdown customers have been using as children's playrooms, garden retreats, summer houses, pool changing rooms, writing dens, offices, or simply as extra luxury family space. Indeed, hotels and businesses have purchased Blackdown Shepherd Huts to use as extra accommodation and catering huts, or to create their own glamping sites.

The Dimpsey Glamping Shepherd's Hut has provided the blueprint for the Turnkey Hut which is now offered by Blackdown as their complete living space solution.

 The Dimpsey hut is designed and kitted out to feel like a luxury hotel, and Emma always goes the extra mile for her glamping visitors, ensuring that all the styling is from British designers. The hut is 18 feet long and contains a double bed, seating, kitchen area and a bathroom with shower and flushing toilet.  It's small, intimate, and very cosy, creating the perfect mindfulness getaway.
